OET Modules Overview

LISTENING MODULE

    Duration: 45 minutes
    The Listening module evaluates your ability to understand spoken English in healthcare contexts through three parts:

  • Part A (Consultation): Listen to patient consultations and fill in gaps or make notes to assess your understanding of specific details, like symptoms or medical history.
  • Part B (Workplace Communication): Listen to short extracts from workplace scenarios, such as handovers or briefings, and answer multiple-choice questions to test your comprehension of routine exchanges.
  • Part C (Presentation): Listen to two healthcare-related talks or lectures and answer multiple-choice questions to evaluate your understanding of complex information.

READING MODULE

    Duration: 60 minutes
    The Reading module tests your ability to process healthcare-related written texts across three parts:

  • Part A (Expeditious Reading): Quickly locate specific details from four short texts in 15 minutes, assessing your scanning and skimming skills.
  • Part B (Careful Reading): Read six short workplace texts, such as hospital policies or memos, and answer multiple-choice questions to test your grasp of main points and details.
  • Part C (Comprehension): Analyze two longer texts on healthcare topics, followed by multiple-choice questions to evaluate your understanding of complex information and opinions.

WRITING MODULE

    Duration: 45 minutes
    The Writing module focuses on profession-specific tasks:

  • Task: Nurses typically write referral or discharge letters based on case notes. This section assesses your ability to structure information logically, with clarity and relevance for the target reader, usually another healthcare professional.

SPEAKING MODULE

    Duration: 20 minutes
    The Speaking module is tailored to your profession, emphasizing real-world communication skills:

  • Task: Engage in two role-plays where you act as a nurse and the interlocutor plays a patient or caregiver. Scenarios include explaining treatments, providing discharge advice, or discussing symptoms.
